fqpissed problems after deleting quicktime

I deleted quicktime off of my system because I could not get it to work correctly and after doing so I am having problems downloading files. Now everytime I download a mpeg it downloads as a Quicktime file. It's really crazy because I do not have quicktime on my computer anymore. If you can help me with this problem I sure can use it. I am running win98se, 256mb, 30gb, 400 mgz. Quicktime was deleted from the add and remove program. I even tried reinstalling quicktime and unchecking everything and then unintalling it completely. Now I get quicktime files when I download mpg files. These files at one time played on Mic Media.

Hi Darden,

You have to change your file associations so that the program you want to use will start up when you double click the .mpeg files.

Start up Windows Explorer and click on View and then click on Folder Options. Click on the File Types tab and then scroll down to the Video Clip icon and highlight it. Click on the Edit button and in the box that opens up, highlight Open in the Actions: box and then click Edit. In the new box that opens up, click on the Browse button and then navigate to the folder where the program you want to open is and highlight the program executable and click Open. Then keep clicking the OK buttons until you're out of Folder Options.

Try repeating my instructions from above, but this time scroll down to the Movie Clip icon and associate it to WMPlayer. When you highlight the icon, check the File Type Details box to see if the correct extension shows up (.mpg, .mpeg, .mpe, etc...).

You might want to repeat it for the .avi files too (it's another Video Clip icon).

Cricket,

I had to go into the folder options. mpg files was not listed but quicktime still had entries listed so I changed the quicktime movie entrie to open and close using windows media player and also changed the icon to windows player. I will never and I mean never download that junk quicktime player again. It reminds me during the time when I had AOL and wanted to get rid of it. Again that's for all of your help on my problem. If anyone know of a good free program to watch mov. files please let me know. If not one I can purchase. I will check the other extentions also. Thanks

Hi Darden,

I think IrfanView32 can view .mov files as well as many other multimedia formats.

Irfanview can only play .mov files that are compatible with Microsoft Active Movie unless you install Quicktime.

Quicktime is not usually a problem program, is it? At least I don't remember much bad said about it. Not like AOL.
