Hi asilryc,
What are your system specs? What OS are you using? Have you tried right clicking on the Norton AV icon in the systray and choosing Exit or Close? If you start up the Norton AV program from the Start button, you should be able to choose to have the program not start up with Windows somewhere in Options. Cricket

Right click on the systray icon and select "Disable autoprotect".

info
well i'm using windows XP Pro.. i have 256 k ram, so it shouldn't be a problem.. and if it was as simple as clicking 'exit' .. i wouldn't ever look at one of these tech forums. i suppose you would have to have the program to understand. there is no menu in the window, it isn't listed in "startup", and you it isn't in the start menu, either. it's just an auto load program with a mind of its own..

asilryc,
Disabling AutoProtect only suspends that function. NAV is launched as a service. Access the services control panel and set the "Norton Antivirus Autoprotect Service" to start manually. Hope that helps. The Old Man |

If you are having that much trouble with it, the best idea would be to uninstall and find something more controllable, i.e NAV 2002, McAfee, etc.

McAfee is worse. The free AVG is not bad and has a pretty small footprint.

asilryc,
Exactly how much memory was NAV taking up? How were you determining what was used? What were you not able to do? I run NAV2002 24/7 with no problems. I have personally used NAV (on XP), McAfee (on NT server, NT Wks and Win98), Grisoft AVG, Command Software (F-Prot). Where are you having difficulties? The Old Man |

well, im using windows task manager in a bare operating system, an norton loaded, of course.. right now, i have task manager, IE (which takes up 17 mb) and norton.. and that takes up 105 mb PF usage.. maybe i'm not looking in the right spot... but with everything else closed, i can't open java script games, and page builder, which i use to edit my website. (it actually gives me an error telling me that there isn't enough RAM.)

how much RAM do you have? if you need to turn off things like anti viruses which I think are very important, I would consider buying more RAM.

asilryc,
Minimum system requirement for XP is 128 MB, however, that should be adjusted for reality and is more like 256 MB. You still should be OK. What size is your page file? It should be at least 1.5 times your memory (384 MB) and look at the high-water mark or peak usage on the paging file. Enlarge it if you are hitting the top of the file. This will increase your virtual memory. In task manager, I think you are looking at the Page Fault count. Make sure you are showing the Memory Usage and Peak Memory Usage columns. If you are getting Java script errors, this is probably not memory related but may be a Java VM issue. Would need to know the nature of the errors. I don't know much about Page Builder but if it is complaining about memory, then increasing your virtual memory may help that. Additional physical memory is also a quick and cheap fix for many systems. Go to www.pcpitstop.com and do their free hardware check. It is really eye-opening and helpful. Good luck. The Old Man |
