Do you mean realtime recording like the standalone DVD Recorders do ? For DVD-RAM it is called DVD-VR, and I don't know software for this. For DVD+R/+RW it is called DVD+VR and neoDVD is so far the only one I know that supports DVD+VR. I haven't tested it so far, though.

Ah, I see. Ok, first, no AVI, only MPEG is allowed.
The DVD video specification includes: MPEG-1 (PAL: 352x288) (NTSC: x240) MPEG-1 (PAL: 352x576) (NTSC: x540) MPEG-2 (PAL: 704x576) (NTSC: x540) MPEG-2 (PAL: 720x576) (NTSC: x540) So you have such an MPEG file and want to burn a DVD-video disc, right ? What you need is an authoring software. There are plenty of them on the market, like WinOnCD 6 DVD Edition, Ulead DVD Factory (or PowerTools), neoDVD, myDVD, DVDit!, Impression DVD, Studio 8 etc. etc. etc. I haven't tried them all, but Ulead's products are good, MyDVD and neoDVD are more basic, DVDit! isn't very stable, haven't tried WinOnCD 6 DVD Edition, Impression DVD and Studio 8 yet. Studio 8 is a video editing/dvd authoring combo software, btw. RJ |

Yep, alot of choices. Many of them can be downloaded as a trial, so you can test them before buying the most suitable for you.
Also, to correct myself: Second line (352x576) should be MPEG-2, not MPEG-1. Also PAL uses 25fps and NTSC 29.97. If you have an AVI file, all, or at least most, of the authoring softwares do also encode the AVI to the appropriate MPEG file. You can also use the nice encoder TMPGEnc ($49 for unlimited MPEG-2 encoding capability) to create the MPEG file. TMPGEnc or ReMPEG2 are nice tools if your MPEG stream does not fulfil the DVD video specs, so you need to re-encode it. RJ |

I see that there is some software to copy dvd disks to cdr drives. Does any one have experience or want to comment on which software is best?

For DVD authoring I use SpruceUp. It's a simple program to learn, and supports advanced options like importing AC3.
When capturing from my camcorder I use the Pinnacle capture card and Studio 8. I then encode with CCE, and author with SpruceUp resulting in an excellent quality DVD. As far as backing up DVD to CD-R, I have used DVD2SVCD which also requires and encoder. You can try TMPGenc for free or buy CCE for $250 for the lite version. You can also use DVD2SVCD for encoding DVD to DVD+/-R/RW backups. DVD2SVCD is free for download. |

@racerxfactor
There is a nice tool called Teco Bitrate Viewer. It analyzes the MPEG and informs you about the bitrate, resolution etc. The extension itself doesn't matter at all. RJ |
