Question Problem in Excel

Running Windows 98SE and Excel 97.

Suddenly Excel started to act strangely: the files became bigger than usual and this annoying [shared] tag started to appear after the file name in the title bar.

Any clues as to what's happening?

How do I remove that tag and get things back to normal?

TIA

Someone has made the file a 'shared' excel file.

Look under the tools menu, and you'll find an option called 'shared workbook' (or something like that).

Go in there, and turn off the sharing feature (and, optionally, remove any users except yourself).

If you want to know more about the feature, the manual is your best bet.

Good luck!

David.

Do I have to do that for every excel file I create?

It is not a default setting (although you might be able to set up your book.xlt to be that way - haven't tried it).

However, if you are getting these spreadsheets from someone else, and they are all set up that way, then either you have to ask them to turn it off before saving and sending to you, or do it yourself.

It is a feature of a workbook, not the application (if that makes sense?) and hence you need to turn it off in each file, rather than at a global application level.

If you are finding it is regular, you could always create a short macro to fix it, and perhaps put it on one of your toolbars. It would be a trivial macro to record or write.

HTH,

David.
