Partition ???

I'm going over some studies and this is the answer and question

A primary windows partition can have how many logical drives?
• A hard disk with fat partitions can have only one primary partition with a maximum of 23 logical drives. In the English alphabet there are 26 letters, each computer has 3 drive letters, physical A, physical B, B is redirected to A when no second floppy drive is present, and a primary partition C which can have a maximum of 26 minus 3 or 23 logical drives.

could some one explain exactly wht they are talking abot and they saying 23 logical partitions on a drive or actually 23drives

The primary DOS partition stands alone. The you create extended DOS Partitions and creat the logical drives within these partitions.
The reason that you only have 23 logical drive letters available is that "A", "B", and "C" are reserved for Floppies and the first hard drive partition. In reality though you only have 21 or 22 letters available since you will need optical drives. The letters "A" and "B" are reserved for floppies, even if you do not have one installed.

One would think drives could be labelled C1, D1, E1, etc.
Is there a computing need that I don't know for that many logical partitions?

Well, the "need" isn't there as much as it used to be, like with DOS and early Windows, but with everything hooked up and running, including card readers and the like, I'm all the way to "Z" drive now...

CD Space makes a virtual drive for games, etc. That way you do NOT have to use the CD Rom every time you play a game or use Bookshelf, etc. Find it here.

It may not be space effiecent but for apps such as Bookshelf I just copy the CD to my hard drive and install from there. I get rid of the unnecessary files after that. It doesn't take up a drive letter that way. I don't know that will work for games however.
