disableing virus programs

i know this is not too smart and i hesitate to ask but i cant find an answer in search. all down loads say to disable virus and trojan programs before download. i can remove,but how do i disable a program?i'm kind of new to computers and this isn't simple if you don't know how.

What that refers to is the real-time virus protection. Usually, you can right-click on the anti-virus icon in the system tray and there will be an option to disable it. If you don't have any kind of anti-virus program running constantly, you don't need to do anything.

i have tauscan and avg,neither have a disable option,i really don't know if they run constantly,they dont show when i alt ctrl delete,does this mean they are not running?

I am not familiar with either of those programs, but if there isn't an option and nothing is running when you look at all tasks, then you should be fine. Anyway, I never disable my AV program when I download things, and I have never had a problem.

i apprecite the reply,i have been downloading programs with no problems but was allways anticipating something going wrong,this relieves my worrys,thanks again.

With AVG you just right click on the icon on the taskbar and select 'Shutdown AVG Control Center'.

I have Norton's AV and don't disable during download. I do disable while installing.
