question on mp3's?

Hi I hope i'm in the right forum, if not i apoligize.i just bought an mp3 player an would like to know how i can convert songs to mp3 formatte. i'm only using them for my mp3 player so i hope i'm still being legal i know this is a gray area.when i ad songs from my cd's there not in mp3 formatte. I have window media player 9.0 running win 2000

The best, leanest and cheapest (it's free) mp3 converter/ripper would be C-Dex.
