Question NTFS or Fat32

Stupid question .. and probably too late anyway, but reading the forum on diff between NTFS and Fat32 when installing Windows xp, I don't recall being given the choice and went for NTFS. Is this an irrevocable decision or can this be changed/is there any advantage one over the other and if so how do you go about changing?

NTFS is more secure but maybe a hair slower although it shouldn't be noticeable. The thing that I like best about NTFS is that it doesn't want to run scan disk every time your computer is shutdown suddenly. The ability to assign permissions is it's best feature, though for a home system, it is not as neccessary.

NTFS is a more robust file system than FAT32; as mairving said, it has security built into it, and it has other good features as well (such as encryption). If you don't need to dual boot with an older version of Windows that can't read NTFS, definitely go with it.

Although you can convert FAT32 partitions to NTFS in Windows, you can't go the other way unless you use a third-party program like Partition Magic.

RU sure about that Doc; being able to go back from NTFS back to FAT32 using a 3rd party app. like "Partition Magic". It was always my understanding it was never an option; period. Am I wrong?

I am not sure about the primary partition, but other NTFS paritions can be converted; I've done it myself with PM.

Partition Magic will convert any format to (just about) any other, including NTFS, Linux, Fat32 and FAT.
FYI, PM7 will even convert the primary partition from NTFS to FAT32.

Thanks people, clears things up a bit for me - new big words and acronyms(sp) always confuse me(scare me more like).
.. my head hurts after my new first build over the past couple of days so I'll just leave you guys to argue it out between yourselves. Cheers for now.

{laugh}, after re-reading my last post, it's no wonder your head hurts. I hadn't realized that I used so much geekspeak.

Unless you have a specific need for FAT32 stick with NTFS.
