I’m not sure this is posted in the right forum and if a moderator wishes it to be posted somewhere else I’ll be glad to do so.
I have a Windows ME machine running Outlook Express Ver. 6.0. I need to Export the messages (Inbox and Sent) for Import to Outlook XP on another machine running WinXP. Every time the Export of Messages function is run in Outlook Express the result is the following message. “An error occurred while initializing MAPI”. After numerous searches on the Microsoft Knowledge Base I’m still on high center. Any solutions? Does a version of Outlook have to be installed on the WinME machine for the export to work? Is there a downloadable utility that will accomplish the same purpose? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!! Bill P |

Ezy: Thanks, but please let the mods direct traffic. The other thread is closed, let's help WJ in here!
I'm a bit hazy on OE6, but I believe it still stores .dbx files in your identity. Try finding them, then just copy the whole folder over to the other machine - and see if you can import them into Outlook from a "store directory". |

glc,
Thanks for the help. OE uses .dbx but Outlook doesn't. I had thought about that earlier and looked. I guess that would be too simple for MS. and the two applications are too different. Sorry for the previous response. Thought you had pulled the thread. Any help appreciated. Bill P. |

glc,
Your right. But the kicker, I suspect, is that both apps must be installed on the same machine. That would protect the interest of MS. I'm thinking about installing an old version of Outlook 2000 on the machine and see if the export will work. Then in a second step export from Outlook 2000 to Outlook XP on the new machine. Does that make any sense. What a drill for something that should be so easy!!! Thanks!! Bill P |

I don't know about with Outlook XP but with 2000 you can import from anywhere on your network. You can also cut and paste them. Let Outlook do the work.
I can't imagine that they would make it harder on the newer versions, well actually I can! If nothing else look on Microsoft's KB or Woody's Office site I believe this was a common problem a year or two ago but I don't remember the solution. |
