backing up quicken
Hello,
I'm helping a friend of the family out with his computer and we're trying to back up everything on cd right now, then we're putting xp on to replace me. specifically, all of his quicken files. I saved his files, but when I try to open them from the cd I am not able to. well, being as there are years and years of data on there we are not eager to wipe out the hard drive until we are absolutely sure that we have backed up his quicken data. So I thought maybe someone at the mech might be able to help us out. if the files are backed up, why can't we open them from the cd? I have zero experience with quicken. comments always appreciated! |

Quicken itself has a backup command. It should be under the File menu. Just click on it and tell it where to back up your files to. Try that first and see what happens. There is more than one data file, so if you just have one of them you probably won't be able to open it.

When you make a backup, it lumps all the files into one big one, and changes the extention, so the only program that can read the backup is the one used to create it.
A simpler way is to copy the entire Quicken folder to CDR. Once you've got XP installed and set up, install Quicken, then copy everything except the program files back from the CDR. Everything will fall naturally into it's proper path that way (usually). |

Yeah, I highly reccommend copying the whole folder.

I upgraded and moved my Quicken from one PC to another this year. I went from Quicken 98 Basic to Quicken 2001 Deluxe. I just did a normal Quicken backup that is in the Quicken file dropdown on the Basic 98 PC. I installed Quicken 2001 Deluxe on new PC and did file restore using file drop down for restore.

If you burn the whole Quicken folder, then copy it back, remember to remove the read-only attributes then reinstall the software over the top.
