Most of the Compaq's have a hidden partition on the hard drive that contains all the system restore info. All the restore CD does is direct the system to run the restore from the hidden partiton. If you replace the hard drive you will need to contact Compaq support and purchase a rebuild disk. I have never tried to access any of the files on this hidden area, I'm not sure if you can.

Thats on the newer Compaqs. The ones that have everything on the restore CD's have no extraction method that I know of other than run it and let it wipe and reimage the drive.

Right glc i have tried on several older compaqs like 5020's etc and you can't extract anything except the previous software that came in the bundle. And like on the older ones drivers etc are pretty useless because they are so outdated but get ya going .
