Uninstall Office 97

I have a client who installed Office 97 on their Windows XP machines. They want to upgrade to Office XP, and I have no problem with that. However, when I go to add/remove the software they prompt me to install the disc, and I do so. But instead of bringing up an uninstall option it just brings me back up to the standard setup screen. I have checked through the setup and there is no option for an uninstall. Is there a file on thd CD I can execute to uninstall office. I've searched for "uninstall" and "unwise" on the cd and neither turn up any results.

Office XP does not seem to want to install over top of 97. I already tried it that way and it keeps saying cannot open a .CHM file.

I've searched for a removal utility, but have only found a few that will remove remaining files and registry entries after the uninstall. A quick response to this would be appreciated

M$ has a removal tool for Office 2000 but I don't know about 97. I don't remember for sure with 97 but I think you proceed like you are wanting to do a custom install. When get to the part where you chose programs and options you just deselect everything. I'm not sure how well this works if they have installed any Office Service Packs.

Hmm, generally Office XP will remove Office 97 just fine. I would try reinstalling Office 97 and then try installing Office XP.

says it can't find

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\1033\ACMAIN10.CHM

could I try just installing that file and seeing if it will run?

Cool

The (Acmain10.chm) file is the Microsoft Access Help file. When you go to add/remove programs in control panel, and choose Office97, you are prompted to insert your Office97 disk. This should then bring up a menu to repair, uninstall Office97 completely, etc. If not, if repair is available, choose repair option first. You could try to reinstall Office97 as a last resort.
cheers, ~pawprint~

ACMAIN10.CHM is an access help file for Access 10 (XP version). It really has nothing to do with Office 97. I am not sure what the answer is. I can send you a copy of the file when I get to work tomorrow if you like. Possibly the only way to fix it is to pop that file in the path that you listed above and try installing Office XP again.
