Installation Questions

These may seem like dumb, but this is my first time building a computer and I had some software questions.
1)Do I need to install MS-DOS before I can install my operating system?

2)I plan on installing windows XP in the future but for now, would I be able to install windows 98 from my quickrestore disk that came with my current computer?

Thanks to everyone who answers.

Hi,

no you don't need to install MS-DOS before. When you install Windows 98, MS-DOS will be installed automatically. It's a newer version than the last standalone-DOS (6.22) anyway.
Windows 3.11 was the last Windows that required a pre-installed DOS.

Windows XP doesn't even require DOS, you just install Windows XP on blank hard drive and that's it.

Cool

A quick restore disk such as those that come with Dell, Compaq, Gateway, ect. cannot be used to load a OS on a custom build. They are machine specific.

You will need a OS, either retail or OEM.

I'm not familiar with the quick restore disk, but if it contains a full version of Windows 98, then you should be able to use it. Before running setup you need to manually create and format the partitions, though, if they don't already exist.

Anything labelled "Quick Restore" will ONLY work with the computer that it came with. It will not work for you panessa13, sorry.
Confused is right, you need to have a full version of an operating system. If you plan on getting XP in the future, I'd say that now is the time.

I see, Quick Restores are machine dependant. Interesting, didn't know that.

@panessa13
With Windows XP it's very easy. You don't even partition and format the hard drive before running setup, it's all included in the installation routine. Just insert the Windows XP CD, run setup and follow the instructions on the screen.

Panessa,
Whatever operating system you install, you don't have to install ms-dos first.

XP's actually the easiest of all to install because all you do is pop the cd in, boot from the cd, and follow the instructions on the screen.
