Downloaded movies wont play on DVD player

I have downloaded some movies via kazaa and have burnt some of them to CD. I have tried to play these in a normal DVD player and they wont play. The movie that I burnt to the CD was in AVI format. Is there a converter software converter program that I can get to convert the AVI movie to a format that will play in a normal DVD playe. or is it not possible.

By normal do you mean a standalone player? To play it in a standalone you have to check what format the player can handle. More than likely you will have to convert the avi to VCD (MPEG-1) or SVCD (MPEG-2) if you wish to burn on CD-R.

You can use TMPGenc for this. Or you can try out VCDEasy.

I see, you downloaded the typical illegal stuff, and if it's avi then it's in this DIVX format. Just forget about it to view it on the standalone. Because it's illegal what you do, the simple suggestion: Buy the movie
Or inform yourself about the Video CD, Super Video CD and DVD video formats.

I don't think we should judge him on whether or not it's illegal because we don't know. The avi could be of anything, and there are a lot of legal avi's out there. TMPGenc will easily convert a DivX avi. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the info guys.
RJ, I would just like to point out that the AVI s that I have downloaded to my computer are legal (as far as I am aware) being promotional movie clips and demonstration movies, mostly for my hobby in woodworking and computers. I just wanted to put them onto a CD so as to make room on my computer, I only have 8Gbytes hard drive.
Using a 56k modem connection, as I do, would make Downloading a full length movie prohibitive, I am sure it would take days to download a full length movie.

needhelp -- RJ is right in that the AVI's are most likely encoded using the DivX (or possibly XviD) codec. If you want to make them playable on a DVD player, you'll need to convert them to (S)VCD. Check out www.vcdhelp.com -- they are a great resource and have wonderful step-by-step instructions.
