Maybe this is the wrong forum, but I got a problem with my CD ROM reading game CDs

I've been having problems with my CD ROM reading game CDS recently. The only real problem I've experienced was in installation. The first time was during installation of Tribes 2. I began installing it, and about half way through it said it could not read a certain file off of my CD, and I had to cancel the operation. I tried it 2 or 3 more times, the 3rd time having no problems. then I tried installing Wolfenstein, and it once again said it could not read a file from the disc, about half way through. I tried again and it got to about 60 percent until it said the same thing. I kept tryoing and i tried about 10 more times, each timne getting closer to 100 percent, until it finally worked. Now with Max Payne, It jt wont work. If I do 100% install it goes all the wya to 97 percent and then says "Please insert disk0 with cab3 file on it" or osmething to that effect. I have tried on my own computer maybe 15 times. Then if I do partial install it installs, but once started an error message pops up saying an important file is missing. I know it's not the disk because I have tried it on my moms computer, and it worked just fine. I am worried this will present more problems in the future, not to mention i really wanna play Max Payne. If anyone has anny idea at all what this could be, or what the problem is, I'd greatly appreciate some help.

Have you tried cleaning the CD drive with a lens cleaning kit?

If cleaning it doesn't work take the drive by a good computer repair shop and have them check the alignment on the laser. Ask what they charge first as it may be cheaper to buy a drive. The guy I use doesn't charge but a couple of bucks but some shops have mini.

I had the same problem recently installing an OS it turned out I needed to run a CD cleaner through the CD drive.Have you tried installing the game on a machine you know the CD works on ? Thats your best and cheapest bet.
