system disk question
I'm making a system disk to use on a new build by following the directions in the assembly section. I'm using Windows 98 and couldn't locate one of the files. The directions say to put fdisk.exe, format.com, edit.com, Qbasic.exe, regedit.exe, uninstall.exe, sys.com, scandisk.ini, chkdsk.exe and attrib.exe to the disk and that edit.com and Qbasic.exe should both be there because they need each other to work. I searched for all the files and put all of them on the disk except for Qbasic.exe because I couldn't locate it. Is there a specific folder its supposed to be in or is there a site where I can download it. I'm thinking it must be on my computer because edit.com is. Help please.

Don't have my win 98 readily available but if I remember correctly, just go to ControlPanel>AddRemove Programs, and then you'll see a tab for startup disk. Put floppy into drive and from there windows will do all the work.

I've never heard of qbasic being required for a Win 98 startup disk ????
Command.com is required. Actually, I don't think that Qbasic was offered after Win 3.1 ?? Do you have a link to the thread you are refering to, panessa13? TwoRails |

Thanks for the link, panessa13
![]() Now I get it.... Qbasic is only required if you want to run Edit.com. I checked my Win 98.2 CD, and Qbasic IS on it !! TwoRails |

When you make one from the startup disk tab, it does add all those files except perhaps that qbasic one.

Ok, thanks everyone. I just wasn't sure if I really needed that file or not.

You actually do not need a startup disk at all - Windows 98 CD's are bootable and all newer motherboards support booting from CD.
