Identifying file formats

Hi, I am having a bit of trouble Identifying files I use to use with windows 98.
My TIF files are now "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" format in Windows XP. I use omnipage as my OCR software, so I always save as tif, I find the OCR software works fine. But since I have bought a new machine with XP on it, the files Ive copied over seem to have changed format, I did a search for TIF with no results. There does seem to be a different way of doing things with win XP, even Microsoft word which use to have the extension (DOC) has now changed to (Microsoft Word Document). What’s going on?

You are reading the associations, not the extensions. You need to customize your folder views to NOT "hide file extensions for known file types" in order to see the extensions.

I see what you are saying, but that shows the actual files extention. I was thinking about when you right mouse on the file......down to properties...where it says "Type of file" (i'm sure with win 98) it use to say TIF.
Win XP says "Microsoft Office Document Imaging File"

That's simply because .tif is associated with M$ Imaging. My Win2000 works the same way - a .tif on mine is a "Irfanview TIF file" because Irfanview is my default viewer for .tif. My .doc files are "Microsoft Word Document" just like yours.

If you want to search for all .tif files on your computer, use *.tif as your search parameter.
