Smile Norton AV and Sys Works Combinations

With all the choices offered from Symantec, such as Nortons

1) Internet Security Pro Edition 2003

2) System Works Pro 2003

3) Anti-virus 2003

does a home-personal computor need all three. Or would (2) System Works Pro 2003 offer all thats needed for Anti-virus, Firewall protection etc for a DSL connection and running Win 98se?

Cool

Of the three, Anti virus is the only product I would be interested in. I run Norton's AV now but am seriously considering switching to AVG from www.grisoft.com when my current subscription to Norton's AV expires.

I don't trust system works. Have read too many threads on this forum about people having problems.

I have a router that I use for firewall protection.

I use Norton AV and Zone Alarm. I learned my lesson with System Works and I don't care for Norton's firewall.

I agree that Norton Anti-Virus is tops and the rest are stinkers.

I would suggest using NAV or AVG (confused's post) with Zone Alarm. I have seen norton's utilities cause way too many problems. Their firewall is very confusing to learn, too. I have a client who is constantly calling me because he can't do something, and I have to walk him through the norton internet security settings.

In all fairness, Sygate is also an excellent free firewall, we have quite a few members that prefer it.

All you need is NOrton AV, but many times you can get an OEM version of system works cheaper. In that case I still only install the AV program. However if your computer is running Windows 98 or ME Norton Utilities Defragging program is much better than the MS built in. Just don't use anything else.

Yup.. what morris said... We sell the retail box NAV for $30 more than the OEM SystemWorks, so most people just get the SystemWorks package, but we only install the AV portion of it.

Talking The followup

Thanks for the ideas.

After looking at and reading about the different combinations, I decided and purchased NAV and ZoneAlarm.

I kept some of the original system works goodies and after an effortless time with each new and shiny cd, poof, I'm feeling safe and fat dumb and happy.

The two programs seem to compliment one another. Some problems or should I say quirks have disappeared.

Thanks to GLC and the others for the info.

Hi LWHiway,

I would (and do) go with the System Works Pro over just the AV for several reasons. One, it includes the full version of NAV. Speed Disk, just one of the many utilities included, is one of the better defragger around. There are also other very useful utilities included like Disk Doctor (which is better than ScanDisk), a Registry file editor, and many more.

Also, it includes Ghost, which is $70 retail! All this for a whopping $2 more at NewEgg for just NAV (OEM prices).

I've used Norton since when there really was a person named, "Norton" and it has never given me problems.

HTH

TwoRails

PS: Never tried the firewall, though, as I use Zone Alarm Pro and am more than happy with it.

I had the works pro 2003 but gave it up and have just the corporate AV . Have used Zonealarm for 2-3 years and behind nat router. May switch out of zonealarm and go to grisoft. Norton utilities gets in the way. It seemed like norton was everywhere attached to everything and Speed disknot good with NTFS. The best sweeper I have found is Evidence eliminator but it will wipe you out if you are not careful and do not really read the manual. Lady behind me dumped her sys using it. Killa prog
