NAV 2003 is buggy!
For several years, I have recommended nothing but Norton AV to my clients. I have installed 2001 and 2002 on dozens of machines, and never had a problem (unless they were already infected with a virus, of course). Then, a few months back, they release 2003. Out of the 20 or so copies I have sold and installed, half of them screw up on install, or show problems after the computer has been used for a while.
The usual install errors are the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime errors, and after doing everything NAV suggests on their website, I still have problems. But, if I remove NAV 2003 and install NAV 2002, I have no problems. The after install problems are many and mixed. Everything from auto protect not being able to scan incoming Email, to the weekly virus scan opening 10 windows up at the same time. Weird stuff. What is going on? Am I the only one that is having trouble? |

No I don't think you are. There have been a lot of install issues on the Symantec site. I personally have installed several dozen copies of 2003 and the only issues I have had were if the machine previously had 2002 or another Norton progrma that uses liveupdate installed.
So far, croos my fingers, if I uninstall liveupdate and install the latest one from Symantec's site before I even try to install NAV2003 I have no problems. By the way the way the only problems I have had were 2000 or XP as the OS, but I work on very few computers that don't use 2000 or XP. |

Doesn't it say in the readme that you should uninstall previous AV versions?

I have Win2k, and all I did to install NAV2k3 was uninstall NAV2k2 first. No problems or issues other than the uninstall of 2k2 wiped out my default beep sound selection, a simple registry edit fixed this.

Well, I wonder what I'm doing wrong. And won't your quarantined viri be 'let loose' if you uninstall NAV?

Uninstalling NAV won't uninstall liveupdate. I guess because other Norton programs use it also. Even if you don't have any of the others it will remain until you uninstall it also.

It's easy enough to delete everything in quarantine before you uninstall.
