CD-ROM/RW drivers
Hello everyone...I'm a newbie to the forums here.
Right now I'm saving up to build my first system (specs in my sig) I hope to use the CD-ROM and CD-RW drives from my Compaq Presario (piece of crap...) Anyway, I'm pretty sure the PC didn't come with drivers for the aforementioned drives, so what I'm wondering is: Will Compaq send me those drivers if I call them and ask? If so, will I have to pay? Thanks a lot! |

You don't need drivers for optical drives unless you are still running Windows 3.1 and DOS - Windows 95 and newer has generic ATAPI drivers that automatically install.

WinXp should have no problem loading native drivers for those drives, and since winxp has built in cdrw burning capabilities, you may even be able to write to cd's without any 3rd party software. My cdrw is quite old, (iomega 4/4/24) but winxp handles it just fine with xp's built in drivers and I burn data to disk just fine with XP's built in cdrw software, so 'm sure your install should work OK without having to try to get anything from compaq.
