Erm, there is a free program called WinVNC and this is fantastic, works over a LAN and over the internet

http://www.realvnc.com/download.html

Sorry, not sure about your specific software question. Can only tell you that VNC definitely does work in XP

pcAnywhere works very well, but it's not worth the money if you both have broadband, the free VNC works just as well, the only things that VNC won't do that pcAnywhere does that matter are the ability to transfer files between the 2 machines and do remote printing (print from his machine to your printer).

To use pcAnywhere, you set his machine up as a host and yours up as a remote, and you can connect direct TCP/IP to his IP address over the Internet (if he is running a firewall or router you will have to forward 2 ports), or you can use modem to modem direct dial. This is oversimplified, but this is the concept. The details can be found in the program's help file. When you connect, you will have his desktop in a window on your PC and you can control it.

Note that pcAnywhere 10.5 is the only version compatible with XP.
