I came across this "browser incompatibility": http://simcity.ea.com/
I have Opera7's brower ID set to Opera, and I get stopped by what the webmaster thinks is "incompatible". As soon as I switched the broser ID to IE6, i worked fine. I saw nothing wrong with the site. So, what do you think of that?

It's just shortsightedness on the part of the site developer - or laziness.

The point is that it actually works with opera, when they say it's incompatible.

The developer has chosen to use a browser identification script to serve an appropriate page and has simply not allowed for anything but IE and Netscape/Mozilla.

Please. Let Opera do the conforming.
Don't expect the designer to. Personally I could care less if opera works on my site or not, and it doesn't hurt me a bit. As long as IE works i'm fine. And it has nothing to do with laziness. Theres not enough opera users to worry about.

Excuse me? The new version of Opera will work just fine with almost ANY page written for IE - can't you just tell your browser detection script to serve an IE page when it detects Opera? I think you missed the point here - when someone uses Opera to go to a site and is denied access for "incompatible browser", that's the result of this detection script. When you go into Opera's preferences, you can tell Opera to ID itself as Opera, IE, or Mozilla - and when you change it to IE to get an IE-specific page and it works fine, that shows me a considerable effort on Opera's part to allow its browser to comply with the proprietary M$ standards in addition to W3C standard!
No disrespect intended, but you need to get your head out of the sand. There are more Mozilla and Opera users out there than you seem to want to acknowledge. If all you care about is IE, fine - that's your choice - but why DENY access to your site with a different browser? Go ahead and serve your page - if it looks like crap, that's another issue but at least you aren't discriminating that way - you are only coding to M$ instead of W3C standard. |
