question about downloading winrar file?

hei guys i have some question

recently i try to download some files from the internet. those files are in .rar format. when i click on the download link a blank page with weired symbol show up instead of the saving dialog box which allow you to save the file. As i noticed those file is in SFX archive format which allow the user to download the file withou download the actual winrar program. is that because i dont' have the winrar program and the blank page with weired symbol show up.

I've not encountered the problem the way you describe it, but I have downloaded rar files and couldn't open them.
You can get winrar here.

You need to right click on the link and "save target as".

If you right click on the link and select "copy url to clipboard" or whatever IE calls it (I don't use IE) then paste it into Notepad and read it, does the link end with .exe or .rar? If not, this is not a direct download, it has to run a script, usually Javascript, and you cannot use "save target as". If this is the case, something is broken in IE or you have spyware, browser hijacker, or a virus screwing things up.

I suspect one of the latter is your problem - I'm not passing judgement on you, but I *know* what type of sites usually offer their wares (?) in .rar format, and they are generally loaded with junk that installs itself into IE without your permission - or it forces itself to install or you don't get access. I personally wouldn't even visit sites such as this with IE, using Mozilla or Opera is a lot safer.
