I have partiton magic i have created two partitions on one drive. One partition has 98 on it the other has XP on it. I installed boot magic after creating the two drives and i was unable to switch to my other partition it gave me a boot record error it said it was not able to write to the MBR it seems as though it needs to in order to load the choice at start up which it will not do no matter how many times i try it. Win98 is active where as XP is hidden and it was vise versa when i was in xp for just that one time to install it. I was completely baffled as to how i got back into 98 with out boot magic. But it wont let me back into XP it keeps giving me BS about writing to the MBR im guessing it has to write to it in order to make the switch but it doesnt want to any tips as to how to fix this? I NEED SOME SERIOUS HELP!!!!!

Uninstall Boot Magic - you don't need it, XP will give you a boot menu if 98 is installed first followed by XP.

It still doesnt work. 98 is the default drive which is active in the partition. The second partition with contains XP is hidden and it wont even let me unhide it. It gives me errors and i cant even make it active. Thats how i got back to win 98 was to make 98 active it onlyworked one time. Even at start up it wont give me an option to choose what i want.

Can you use Partition Magic to convert the XP partition from a primary partition to an extended partition with a logical drive? If so, this might fix it - nothing will have to be hidden any more. To get the boot squared away, you would use a bootfloppy to resys it with 98, then boot with the XP cd and do a repair. Note that this will make the 98 partition C and XP D.

Ok i fixed it. There is a program on this computer which is pretty nifty to have from now and then but it is veru protective of what is installed on the computer. It wont let you install anything that asks for full rights unless you disable it. The program is called Gateway GoBack. It has a power protection software in it. So when i tried to write to the MBR it wouldnt let me but i had to uninstal it and all of the problems i was recieving went away so its ok. Thanks all for your help and consideration
