Question What OS should I use?

I'm just about finished with a new build. Asus P4S8X, Pentium 2.4, CD burner, DVD ROM, Abit Siluro GF4 MX-8X, on board sound. I'm not into gaming. Just for home use, mostly word processing applications, cd burning, and surfing. What OS should I go with? Are there others out there besides Windows that are better and have good compatibility?

XP Home would be a good choice; Mwave has the OEM version for about $89.

I moved from Win98 to XP for home PC but till today, still didn't like it. Neither does my wife. My office moved from Win98 to Win2k and I love it.

I just installed Win2k at home (on my wife's pc) and she loves it.
Why? Not too sure but I thing its the MMI (man machine interface). So my vote goes to win2k.

You can make make the the XP interface feel pretty much like its NT father. You can also make it feel like 9x father-in-law. It takes some work hunting down those stupid agents they integrate into everything, but it can be done, I know. ;)

Respectfully,

Cool

My vote is with XP. I have it here at home. It is worth it for the restore feature alone in my opinion.

I used W2K when I was working and liked it also.

But my prediction is that MS will soon stop support for W2K in a effort to force businesses to migrate to XP.

Either Win 2K or XP. Are you going to network other systems together ever?

I'm in multi-boot with Win 98SE, Win2KPro and XP Pro and I find XP is OK. I'm now thinking of trying the LINDOWS. I heard this is another stable OS. Hmm?

Yes, another for XP Home. XP rocks! It automatically fixes errors, it is alot more stable, and also its more "user friendly"

i use xp pro on one comp. and w2k pro on the other,(xp on the classic look) i find both reliable and stable but xp is able to accept many programs w2k will not.also i think xp has more drivers,xp auto installed my diamond supra 7230 serial modem,(i don't have driver and cant find one)the w2k doesn't have driver for it,it will install "unknown modem"that works but falls out pretty often, and i have to re-install.i reccomend xp.also the restore feature on xp has saved me several times when i fouled up.and xp home is cheaper than w2k pro.

Well just to let you all know, I went with Windows XP. All went fine. I did change it to the performance look though. The colors in the standard mode were driving me crazy. Got OEM software and did full install. Could not do update for some reason. M/S won't give support because it's OEM. Gave me some web site that doesn't work. Cant update now.
