I prefer PCC2k2 as well. Its light and extremely capable. Updates are frequent, yet small in size.

The best is the one that works, usually called "Intelligence and Restraint"...in other words, if you think about it, and don't like what it might do, don't click on it.
Norton is bloatware, as are most of the others. FProt for DOS is great in a pinch, otherwise just go with whatever is free at the moment. Any AV is only as good as it's updates (here's where intelligence comes in again), if you don't update, don't whine if you get a bug. If Outhouse Express weren't allowed to exist, most trojans wouldn't be written, because there would be no way for them to spread. [/rant] |

IE is a security risk, not a trojan spreader. Two completely different problems

Back about 4 years ago, when I asked this very same question here at PCMech, the vast majority of members said, Panda. Without exception they all said stay away from Norton.
Well I went out and got Panda. I have had no trouble with it at all. It does exactly what it is supposed to do........Ummmm as long as you have it turned on when you go on line. ![]() It is set to update every day when I go online. Updates have been very inexpensive. I paid $35. Cdn for three years of updates after the first year. Back in Nov 02, I purchased a further three years, cost $39. Cdn. Panda guarantees to have a sig and fix for any virus within 24hrs of it hitting cyber space. They also guarantee their response time to your questions. There support service is excellent. During my recent virus problem, the one where I had the AV turned off, , I had some problems getting info, but it turned out it was my own fault. I was not looking in the right place. While I don't believe I have enough knowledge or experience with other AV's to give an opinion on which is best, I can only say Panda has been a good investment. For home use the license is good for up to 5 PC's in my home. It currently is installed in all four of our PC's. In the four years we have had Panda it has stopped all virii and trojans from accessing our PC's. That's pretty good in my opinion and it is what I paid for. Hope this helps.

Gawd I hate Norton.
Their website is good for specific problems, but running that overblown piece of bloatware on my computer is out of the question. And there's no way I'd actually pay for it. Get something that doesn't slow down your connection to a crawl, scans when you want it, goes away when you don't, and doesn't take up 3 gig of space on a drive, nor 128 meg of RAM to run. |

I have had no problem with Norton slowing down my system and I've been using various versions of it for the last 4 years. I have mine set up for real time file scanning but it isn't set up to do full scans automatically. I run a full scan once a week when I'm going to be away from my PC for awhile. Live Update is quick and painless for me.
It's just the Antivirus....not the System Works package or anything like that. I guess I'm not seeing the same problems as you reboot. |

Am with reboot .. I HATE Norton as well. To add on to the above reasons, here's another one: I hate softwares and software developers that cannot clean up after themselves. Try removing Norton, its a mess. Not only does it leave LiveUpdate and all other crap (even if you uninstalled the only Norton product that was on your computer), but it refuses to remove the entries that were created; on occasion even leaves the computer full of files that you arent going to use.
Also, while there are a number of smaller antivirus companies out there that have exceptional service and great updating frequency, they sometimes are not large enough to put out updates and advisories by themselves. Sometimes its good to spend money on a brand name; Trend Antivirus is one of the largest corporate (and enterprise) antivirus solution companies around. |

If you have a connection to the internet, I would recommend checking out -
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ They do an online scan and you can still multitask will it works. Also they have daily updates and its FREE. If you go there, click the "scan without registering" link. About the only drawbawback is your connection speed as it downloads the dat files to you. The first time can be a bit of a pain. |

he he he.....VERY TRUE!!! I did have a web site once that had the trend micro online scan. I tested it and it seemed to work really well. Of course, you don't have real time file scanning though. But overall it is a good free method. |

Hot Rod...If you've had Norton on your machine for 4 years, how would you know if it slows down a machine or not? In 4 years, you haven't run a machine without it.
Build an identical machine, do a completely fresh install of the OS on both, and put Nortons on 1, and AVG on the other, leaving the default settings in place. Now benchmark them... If I dug deep enough, I could find a hundred threads on Norton related problems, with installation, upgrading, uninstallation, registry corruptions, LiceUpdate (sic) crap, unwanted connection popups, failed scans, failed updates, trojans not detected,..the list goes on... ![]() Don't even get me started on McAfee ![]() I can't believe they want almost $100 CDN for McAfee something Suite in the stores, and I cringe whenever I see someone pick up the box....but then I think...I might get to fix that machine in about 3 hours, after the customer has given up trying to get the computer to run after installing it.

I must be lucky - I have never had a significant problem with Norton - and I've personally used every version since and including 5.0. It's saved my butt a few times when I got careless and it seldom gets in my way. Then again, I run a lot of other bloatware too (anyone who has seen a pic of my systray will agree) and I'm very careful about how I configure things and I clean out junk on a regular basis.
When my customers ask for my advice, I tell them if they want to buy one, get Norton or PCCillin, if they want a decent freebie that works, download AVG. I've worked on a lot of machines, and the only one that consistently causes problems is McAfee. AVG is the best choice for a Win95 machine because Norton 2k2 or 2k3 won't install on 95, 2k1 was the latest supported version. Also, if you are running NT or 2K *Server* AVG will install but consumer Norton won't, only Corporate. |

I am using Norton 2003 and I can see no performance lag. My machine and surfing is as fast as it was before I installed it.

At home, yes, all I have used is Norton. I don't like testing a lot of other programs on my home PC just because I can't really afford for my home PC to be down or reformatted every two days. However I have built many and worked on many with various antivirus programs and I don't see any lag with Norton.

I have used, and uninstalled every bit of stuff in the System works package. I work on at least 2 machines a week that have some bit of Norton on them, causing some sort of problem.
I find their AV does work, most of the time, but it's such a huge piece of bloatware, that there are better ones around, that work faster, and take less room, without installing crap like lice update on the system. The ONLY thing Norton is still good for is Ghost, the rest of it is garbage. The original Norton Utilities (back when Norton still owned the company, way before Symantec) and it fit on a 5 1/4" floppy, it was a SUPERB program. |

Do any of you have a step-by-step, failsafe way to uninstall NAV 2003 (all of it) from WinXP? Crank
