Win98 not recognized by Windows Update???
For some odd reason, I have been unable to even get to Hotmail's home page, let alone log in. A week ago, everything was fine. Nothing much has changed. We've DLed a few programs, but our virus scanner (Sygate) hasn't picked up anything. Whenever I visit a few other forums where I have admin friends, they have told me that Sitemeter says I'm running Netscape. I don't even HAVE Netscape! Windows Update says "Thank you for your interest", and "You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update". I'm running WIN 98!! ***??? Belarc Advisor says we're running Win98SE for some odd reason. This is a new PC as of last month. Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated! TIA!

Maybe a conflict between another program. I my self know that you may not have a browser installed in your system. Even when you go into add/remove programs its not their but under Program Files there the folder sits with an .exe extension to be installed. Its already in the regisrty if thats the case. And me be similar to a browser you are currently using. As for windows update not recognising your computer as a Windows machine. Thats another story all together. I wouldnt bother getting updates my self. Here is what you can do if you want updates for Windows98SE. Ifs it's up to someone else there is always another update site floating around. Well it just so happens this isn't a site but a program. Yeh it sounds ghetto just for what your doing but **** you can get virtualy anything off of here. Goto www.kazaa.com and download the kazaa program and install it. When you get it running search for Windows update or other windows update terms and download the win98 update. Let me know if this helps you in any way.

Sygate is a firewall, not an AV program. Turn it off, and try again.
Go into Add/Remove programs, Internet Explorer, and click on Add/Remove, you should get an option to "Repair", use it. |

BTW, Win98SE is just Win98 Second Edition (as opposed to First Edition).
It is still Win98. RenamonXP: I don't really understand why you would use the KAZAA site. Please could you elaborate on that for me? Thanks, David. |

I don't think it's appropriate to recommend that someone install Kazaa to get Windows updates.
If you are suggesting that someone use Kazaa to download Windows, that's a big no-no here, you might want to read our FAQ before you make a post like that again. |
