Anybody know...
If a person has Windows Messenger ver 4.7 on a XP Home edition box, do you need do anything special to get MSN Messenger installed, like uninstall Windows Messenger first? My brother in law says that the new version MSN messenger 5.0 supports netcam sessions with parties, even if a party has no camera. They can see you but obviously you cannot see them as there is no video capture. Does anybody know the method to switch?

You don't "switch", just download and install MSN messenger 5.
You can actually uninstall Windows Messenger if you like, as it is a completely different thing than MSN Messenger. Don't get the two confused. |

It will install without doing anything, just can't run both at the same time.

Reboot, I have had both at different times on different machines. MSN Messenger on a Win98 box and now Windows Messenger on a XP home box. They seem almost identical....what's the difference?

One is for messaging across a lan, and is currently an annoyance, as any website that get's your IP can message you with popups though it.
MSN Messenger is the internet chat client, and NOT subject to the messenger problems. You can have both, but Windows Messaging is outdated, and pretty much obsolete. |

When you are connected to the Internet, a new window may open on your computer screen containing an advertisement. The windows are labeled Messenger Service in the title bar. However, these messages, which are sometimes called "messenger spam," are not related to Windows Messenger, MSN® Messenger or such instant messaging services. Disabling your instant messaging services will not stop this form of advertisement. These advertisements are sent via the Messenger Service, which is designed for use by system administrators in Windows server-client networks. System administrators use the messenger service to send messages that notify you of conditions on or give status about your network. However, some advertisers have started using this service to send their information via the Internet.

There is a difference here - and yes, it's confusing. "Windows Messenger" 4.7 that comes with XP is actually a version of the MSN Messenger IM service. The "Windows Messenger" service that gives you popup messages is different, that works a lot like the old WinPopup and is the subject of exploits now.
