I reinstalled win98 for someone and the system won't shutdown or restart in Dos, just hangs. Is this hardware or software and does anybody know of a fix. Biostar 8500Tuc p75 AMI bios. yes its old but they love it.

Combination of both.
Disable all power management in BIOS, and find and delete the file called "dosstart.bat". |

couldn't find file to del but now the box just restarts from shutdown

If this is 98SE, go get the shutdown patch from MS.

I looked for those but I didn't find them I knew they had put out shutdown patches all I saw were IE and SEC patches

Thanks for the help! I went an looked again and found out there are a couple of causes, my problem turn out to be IRQ. MS sugguested disabling IRQ Steering, restarting and trying shutdown, did and got the normal shutdown screen. went in to the BIOS and changed it to give video card own IRQ and everything is fine. Thanks again for you replies! until the next crash peace
