McAfee and boot sector scanning

I was poking around last night on my machine that was having problems with hanging on the Win98 splash screen after I installed McAfee VirusScan and Firewall. I still had some remnants of Norton AV so I uninstalled and deleted everything that I could find, cleaning the registry too. No help. I uninstalled McAfee and re-installed after all of the Norton stuff was gone. Still no help. I booted into Safe Mode often, trying different things, when I hit upon a "solution"- disabling McAfee's boot sector scan. Once I did this, the machine booted up and operated normally.

My question is this- if the other portions of McAfee VirusScan are working normally, how much risk am I putting myself in by not performing a boot sector scan each time I start the computer up?

Thanks,
tranman

Why did you get rid of Norton and install McAfee? McAfee is notorious for screwing systems up - much worse than Norton. If you are dissatisfied with Norton for whatever reason, try the free AVG at www.grisoft.com , its very decent and has a fairly small footprint.
