dvd question

i was wondering how to backup dvds. i dont have a dvd burner but there are mpeg converters or something, where you can save a dvd to mpeg. how would you go about this? just for backup copies. and is it legal?

Well, DVD video is already MPEG, so there is nothing to convert to mpeg. The problem is that most video DVDs are double layered (7,95 GB), whereas DVD blanks are only single layered (4,37 GB). Sometimes the movie itself (without all the extras) will fit to a DVD blank, and sometimes not, then you have to split it up or re-encode it at a lower bitrate.
As for the legality issue it depends where you live. A copy for yourself from an owned DVD should be legal everywhere.

Yes you can re-encode the original dvd at a lower bitrate and also change the resolution in order to copy the dvd to a blank dvd or svcd or vcd.
