My PC just recently started giving me the following problem.
Whenever I play a game, the game will randomly 'freeze' for 30 seconds or so and then be fine again. It does this about every 5 minutes usually. The sound still plays fine as it should. The controls are still recognized but have a latency of a few seconds while the game is 'frozen.' I checked Task Manager and two processes, explorer.exe and System, seem to be taking the cpu time. I reinstalled Win2k and graphics/sound drivers and I'm still getting this problem. It happens in all games. Not sure if it happens in any other applications, can't really tell. It happens regardless of whether I'm playing on the 'net or just a single player game. I've tried turning the graphics detail down, no help. Windows reinstall, no help. Close all but system processes, no help. My specs are 1.7 P4, 640 MB RAM, GF3 Ti200 64MB, and SBLive! MP3+, Windows 2000 Pro. I'm interested in any ideas you've got. Thanks. -Matt |

Did the problem just recently start occuring? Have you done anything that may be causeign some interference, like an upgrade or something? Did you check and make sure the vid card did not fall out the slot. What about your CDROM itself, how old is it? Do you smoke? Have you tried using a CD lens cleaner?

Yes, just recently started. I had upgraded to DX9, but now I'm back to DX7. If the vid card fell out, I probably wouldn't get video, correct? DVD rom is brand new. CDR is about 9 months old. I do not smoke. And I'm not playing these off of a CD.

Does that video card even support DX9? I thought the card had to be able to support DX9 in order to use it. As far as I know, there aren't too many that do yet.
When you went back to DX7, did you totally remove DX9? Cricket

i removed and reinstalled windows 2000, which I thought would remove DX9 completely. According to dxdiag.exe I'm back on DX7, so it shouldn't be a problem. Everything worked fine on DX7 and DX8 so I don't see why i still have a problem. I really don't want to format and reinstall Win2k but it's looking like my only option right now.
Is there any easy way to completely remove dx9 in win2k? |

Nothing wrong with running DX9. It includes all the DX7 components, plus more.
Have you checked the services? How many are running? What's in the taskbar? Any new software you've installed lately? The only time I get lag like that in a game, is when it's trying to read/write to the swap file, because RAM is full. |

I disabled all non-MS services, didn't help. Taskbar just has a few things in it: sound, saitek game controller, thrustmaster game controller, SBLive AudioHQ. That's it.
No new software. This just started happening one day out of the blue. Used to be able to run these games on high detail with no problems, now they lock up every 5 minutes or so no matter what. -Matt |

Have you done a full scandisk/defrag, and tried reinstalling the games?
How about increasing the swap file size a little bit? |

It's called Virtual memory, right click My computer, properties, Advanced...in there somewhere. I'm on XP, and it's slightly different.

Yeah, I already increased it. Didn't help. I reinstalled one of the games and still freezes every 5 minutes or so, then 30 seconds later, it's fine, then freezes in 5 minutes, etc, etc.
