Thanks for the reply.
$900.00 software is a little too much for this budget. Anyone setup a Linux box for this? |

I know that it used to be easier for a blind person to use a computer when it was all about DOS, but I assume this person wants to take advantage of things like the internet, or possibly business apps. If they are planning on starting a business or something, I have heard of government grants that could come in very handy on making that program more affordable, if not, I am sure there is some kind of charity that can possiby offer assistance, I think it would be worth looking into.

I think the 'charity' you are thinking about is the Dept of Vocational Rehabilitation. It's federal and they offer assistance like that. My nephew that has MS got $$$$$$ for a van and have it modified so he can drive it since he's wheelchair bound to go back and forth to school that they also paid for. It is worth checking into,I like seeing my tax $$$ going to help people like that.Just look in your local phone book in the govt' listings

I used to chat on IRC with a blind person - he was able to get a laptop with screen reader software from the government.

http://www.netserv.net.au/doonbank/speech.html has a number of free s/w listings as well
There are Linux/UNIX listings for such softwares as well, if you could narrow it down to what exactly yuo are looking for, you can either look for it on google or freshmeat or post back here. HTH |
