aol taking over?

i dont know about you guys but i cant stand aol! it gets itself into everything in your computer and you have to manualy change everything back to the way you want it. i have both aol(for my roommate) and my internet connection. i dont pay for aol or anything but my roomy uses the account thats on her mothers computer so what ever. well after going through my computer and changing default connections back to mine and taking care of a few other things i notice that at the welcome screen-xp home- when i start up my comp. that it says "you have 2 new messages" . my only guess is that it is aol. so on to my question. how do i get rid of it? i tried to check the preferences in aol but i havent found any thing. any suggestions?

Sorry I cant help you on that, I havnt had AOL for like ever. Thought you would like to know that AOL is actually looking real bad, their stock used to be at like 80-100 dollars a pop, and now its down to something like $12.00, if they keep on their current trend, they will be out of business in about 2 yrs.

thats good to hear avx487, on account that i hate aol. just hope i dont have to wait till then to solve my problem lol. cypher: i dont have anything for aol in my startup. i think its something to do with a setting in aol. its not even in the winsows section just when you startup and have to pick a logon. right under the login name it says you have 2 messages or what ever.

That would be coming from whatever program is your default mail program, and by default is Outlook express in windows, till you change it, so open whatever program is the default mail program and delete the 2 messages..
Sounds like it could be Outlook Express since you said you changed everything back, and it could even be those 2 messages you get by default in your outlook express inbox the first time you open it...

I also found a lot of refernces to aol in my regedit, well, my brothers anyway...saw i like 1000 times...so I just did searches in there, and anything that said AOL got deleted. Im sure there is an easier way to do it. But I sure dont know it

Yes I believe that is where you set default mail program, but I just have a gut feeling that Outlook Express is the culprit.

Your probably right, because I don't think that whatever is under InternetOptions>Programs>Mail is necessarily the default mail handler as far as windows is concerned. It's in the registry too and your probably right AOL is still in control, right where it likes to be. I don't even like my daughter receiving e-mails from anyone who is on AOL, she thinks I'm paranoid and crazy cause of the way I'm always telling her AOL is bad and that she shouldn't go near anything that has anything to do with them..
