Should I defrag Win2k and XP?

Hi all,

We're in the middle of a debate as to whether or not one should defrag regularly while running win2k and xp. Some say not at all, some say absolutely yes once per week.

Any recommendations from the experts to end this debate? I'm running XP and my husband is running 2K and the drives both look fragmented....but network gurus at both our offices say we don't need to run the defragmenter at all. We always schedule a regular scan disk, cleanup, and defrag.

thanks for any info in advance....

Kathy

Imagine the following is a file on your hard drive:

"Any recommendations from the experts to end this debate?"

It's easy to read cause it all right there.

But after a while it'll look like this: "Any....... recomm.....................endat.............ions from the ...................expe..............rts to end this d..............ebate?"

Windows knows where all the pieces are, but it takes longer to gather them all up to show to you. It's only nano seconds but.....

Defrag regularly. You can defrag in the background while you work, so there's no reason NOT to.

That's one of the best examples I've seen.

It is ridiculous to suggest that a drive never needs to be defragmented.
