What O/S...?
...is known to stay up for extended periods of time (with no restarts needed)?

Last I heard, there was an older linux kernel running on a 286 that's been up since 1993...not sure if that's the record or not though.
I know people that have had the same NT4 server up for over a year, and XP boxes that have been running 6 months or so. |

Win98Se: 6 months, 2 crashes, 3 reinstalls, 2-3 daily reboots.
Win2K Pro: 5 months, 12 reboots (admin only), 0 crashes. Win XP Pro: 10 days, 2 reboots (one to load SP1a, one for power failure), 0 crashes. BTW, ran NT Server for 1 1/2 years with no reboots at all, except for administratove purposes (updates and software installs). Very stable at SP6a. Last edited by pillainp; 03-31-2003 at 03:03 PM. |

I didn't even know Linux was around in 1993.

It was a hand written bit of scaled down Unix. Written by Linus Torvald (the guy who invented Linux) back when he was at university. It was a test project for a class, and the university just kept it running on the LAN. AFAIK, it's still going, somewhere in Sweden or wherever Linus is from. I'll look for a link...

The origins of Linux. He first wrote it in 1991 as part of a PhD thesis, I believe. I had the original email asking about Unix deps but seem to have lost it

That is 'coz they say it is supposed to mean Lin(us's) UniX, UX being a common abbreviation for the Unixen. Also it is upposed to mean Linux Is Not UniX.

Actually, there is a sound byte of Linus, supposedly, pronouncing "linux". It is not the popular way of saying it, it seems, but if you want to impress your friends, you can probably find that clip.
