if you get kazaa lite, it is good, just..under NO circumstances...download the regular version.
you can get kazaa lite at www.kazaalite.com
The regular version is filled with nasty little things like spyware and adware....yuck

If you decide to get it be sure to get Kazaa Lite. Run a updated anti-virus and spyware checker. I have used it for over a year and have not had any problems (that's with two teenagers using it), but any time you download from unknown sources you take a chance of getting a virus or more. As long as you are aware and take precautions you should be fine.

Kazaa is a virus in itself, IMO.

I use Spybot on a daily basis and occasionally run Ad-Aware just to be sure.

Some claim that one (either) often catches something the other misses.

Kazaa puts alot of ad files on your computer you can't get off even with ad-aware. I don't use it for that reason and in a CNN headline one time, they were talking about targeting specific users for using Kazaa! So hey take the risk, or don't, it's up to you!

well im not really that gung ho about kazaa. its just that my friend wants to use it and i was trying to talk him out of it because of everything that i've heard bad about it. i have a couple of other p-to-p programs, dont want to be a namedropper though, but are there any other good ones besides kazaa or should you just look out for all of them?

Isn't WinMX supposed to be pretty good? I know that Kazaa is a big time virus spreader.

WinMX is just as big a "virus spreader". All P2P filesharing programs are.
I only use the K++ version of Klite, and watch what you download, and scan what you do.
The WinMX database isn't as big as kazaa (less users=less files), but there are times when one has stuff I want that the other doesn't, so I do have both.

I have to disagree with you reboot. I had kazaa lite for about a day. Every time I searched for something, there was a few files that were obviously viruses...I at least knew to avoid them. I haven't had that happen yet with WinMX

Dont download anything more than mp3's. That's your virus protection.

If you're looking for software at least use common sense and a virus scanner. Anything that claims to be "Windows XP SP1", but is like 1.5Mb and ends in .vbs is most likely not going to be what your looking for.

Also avoid Microsoft extensions, .wma,.wmv,etc. are more likely to do some funny business (popups, etc.).

I also have WinMX, it doesn't get used much. Anything that I can't find on Kazaa usually wont be on MX, or I'll be on queue forever. Not to mention it hasn't been exactly stable for me, whereas I havn't had a single crash from Kazaa.

Cheryl_2, and others.
WinMX has just as many problems as any other P2P program.
ANY file can be a virus/trojan, even if it purports to be exactly what you're looking for, and is exactly the right filesize, and has exactly the right extention.
Maybe they're not as obvious in WinMX, but they're there.
Kazaalite doesn't filter as well, granted, but the search results also reflect the number of users online, something you dont' get in WinMX, and if you feel like waiting in the queue for 2 or 3 days, then you can get the file.
If you really like waiting in queue's, try Edonkey for a few days

Speaking from my own experience, I avoid Kazaa like the plague. I have used Winmx for almost 2 years now and have yet to encounter a single virus problem or a crash. I scan twice weekly with Gladiator and Spybot and find nothing unusual that I can trace to Winmx, but then, I only do Mp3's.

*ANY* peer to peer filesharing service has risks - where you are not getting legitimate software from "official" sources. I don't even trust drivers from driverguide.com that have been uploaded by others.

Depends on what's wrong with the pc (if anything). I've had bonafide software screw things up; even Windows itself caused some snafus.

I've used driverguide drivers too - but you better believe I read all the comments first. I always try the manufacturer's official site first when I'm digging for a driver.
