Nero
I am having trouble using Nero. Do I need to turn off the regular CD burning software in Windows XP Pro, first ? If so, how do I do that ? Thanks

Yes. Start/run/services.msc/Imapi cd-burning Com services.
Also, get the latest update for nero, I had some troubles with it, but haven't since I got the latest update.

Hi Redo40, I tried that but it wasen't my problem. Heres the story.
I just loaded Nero on this computer. I open Nero, start the Wizard, choose CD copy, burn, then it tells me to insert the source disc which I do, but then the process is different from before. It USED to then copy the info. to I guess the hard drive somewhere, then it would eject the disc, and tell me to insert a blank disc, and then it would burn to the new disc. Now after it reads the original disc, (which only takes about 10 seconds) it asks me where to save it, with the default to My documents, which I say ok. But then it tells me that it is burning and it really isn't, because it never asked me to insert a blank disc. What am I doing wrong this time ? Thank you. |

I can't see anything you are doing wrong. Have you tried uninstalling Nero then reinstalling it?

No... you don't have to turn anything off in XP... I run XP and Nero and never turned off burning services as I occasionally use the built in burning as well.

Tried that, no luck. I went into My documents and found that when I thought it was Burning, it was just coping the data to My documents. If I the selected one that I recognized, right clicked on it, I had to option to "send it to CD Rw" which I did, and then it looked like the regular CD burning wizard in XP took over. It did then burn it properly to a disc, but this is a screwy way of doing it. It seems like Nero starts the process, but XP finished it ??

I stand corrected! Thanks Hal for putting it straight, I figured they would cause a conflict.

I am running nero, xp-pro, and ezcd with no problems with any of them, so there should be no software conflicks at all.

Make sure that just before you are about to burn in Nero Express, that you have your CD burner drive selected at the top of the window and not 'Image Recorder'. If you have image recorder selected, it will burn to your hard drive. This selection is in the 3rd. window that comes up and the option is called 'Current Recorder'. If you are doing a CD copy then the option is in the second window and called 'Destination Drive'

What you're doing is, you are using Nero's built in Image Recorder to create Disc images to Hard Disk instead of writing files to CD.
Open Nero, and close the Wizard that pops up. Now, on the Recorder menu in the Nero main interface, select "Choose Recorder" (or press CTRL+R). Yu will get a box with all your available CD Writers listed. Notice that in your case, Image Recorder is selected. Select your regular CD Writer instead. Personally, I feel that the normal Nero CD compilation dialog is way more powerful than the Nero Wizard. Try it out and see. Hope that helps NPP |

Any other suggestions ? I uninstalled and installed Nero for the third time, with no change. When I go into that "Recorder" at the top, I only see the "Image recorder" I do not see my CD Burner. In fact after I do the install, it asks me to choose the recorder, but there is only choice. I am installing from the CD that I got with the Buslink CD burner. I originally installed this Nero in another computer and it worked fine, but that computer died, so I installed the NEW CD burner in this new computer. Would that have anything to do with this probem ? Many thanks for any other suggestions.

Are you sure the CD-RW is working? Have you tried it in another computer yet?
Is the CD-RW jumpered correctly for the type of IDE cable you're using? Have you tried replacing the existing IDE cable? Is there another device on that IDE cable? Have you tried the CD-RW by itself? Cricket

So this Nero was for a Buslink and now you are trying to use it on a different burner? If so that can be your problem. If I remember correctly it's possible that the serial number is meant for the Buslink only. |

Cricket --- I believe the burner is working. I have loaded other software on this computer, and I can also play audio CD's. The burner is on its own cable and it is jumpered as Cable Select.
gbirke --- the software that I am using is the disc. that came with the Buslink burner. |

Additional info---this is what doesn't make any sense. If I download a version of Nero from the internet etc. it install and works properly. (I can select my burner from that "Recorder" area)
But I can't do the update from the Nero site. That is why I am trying to get this legit copy working. |

try downloading express from nero site,it is much easier to figure out, just pick and burn.i could never remember from one time to the next what to do on the regular nero setup.you need to have the nero installed or it won't give you express as an update.

OK,
Try this out. Visit www.nero.com and on the download page, you will find a file called "cdrom.cfg". Download this file and save it to you hard disk. Now go to the folder where you have installed Nero and find the file in there that has the same name. Now rename it to cdrom.old and copy the file you just downloaded to the Nero folder. Reboot your machine. Nero should now be able to detect your CD-Writer and you can select it from the Recorders list. For info, "cdrom.cfg" is a database of all recorders supported by nero. Since you got your buslink a while ago, it is likely that your copy of nero has an older database that does not include your new drive. ftp://ftp6.nero.com/cdrom.zip Also, on the site, you will find a listing of all writers supported by nero and the version of nero that support begins. see if your version of nero supports your new recorder. BTW, in the whole of this discussion, you have not mentioned what version of nero you have (the one you got with your Buslink writer), and the model numbers/names of your writers. That info would be helpful in trying to solve your problem.
And yes, you can upgrade nero to the latest version. Install your current copy of nero. Then download the latest full/demo package from www.nero.com (I believe it is now at 5.5.10.20), and run it. It will detect your current copy and offer to upgrade it for you. BTW, Nero Express is included in the latest version of nero (starting from 5.5.19). Hope that helps |

I am not sure of the exact version, as I am away from my computer. But this version (whatever it is) has worked for about two months with this same burner on my other computer. The Buslink burner )and Nero software that came with it) is about two months old.
I went to the nero site, but could not see that "cdrom.cfg" download file. I even did a search on it and nothing showed up ??? |

My apologies,
I put the link in my last post but one, but it seems it is not so easily visible. Here it is: ftp://ftp6.nero.com/cdrom.zip Just right click the link above and select "Save Target As". |

Did that version of nero come with your burner, or is it off an older burner? I am 100% sure that it will only work with the burner it came with.

Cricket----I just changed the setting for the burner to Master and made the change in the bios, no luck. Still can not see my burner displayed in that recorder area.
Pillainp---Downloaded that file and did as you suggested, still doesn't work. Big Weapons---that is the Nero disc that came in the box with the burner. This is really frustrating. |
