Question Installing WIN98 on a computer?

Need some help here. Im trying to redo a computer for my cousin and im about to make it a "flying out the window" computer! I fdisked the HD and formatted it. trying to install windows 98 on it. I have store bought disks and they are not the upgrades, they are the full install disks. I have tryed to setup from the CD and I also copied it to the HD and tried setup from there and it does the same thing either way. It had Win98 on it originally so I know the comp can handle it. It goes through the scan registry and then says its copying files needed for setup and just hangs right there. ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Also anyone know a good link for the MSCDEX.EXE for the CD-ROM drivers? I copied one to it but it has to read it from the A: during boot-up to work right. I know it's something im doing but I cant figure it out. Thanks in advance.

Are you sure the CD drive letter is correct? Sometimes FDISK creates a temporary disk letter that comes before the CD drive. Try typing "x:\dir" (x being a drive letter) and see if you get the contents of the CD. If yes, then type" x:\setup"

Yes i have the right drive. its E: when using the start-up disk. I checked with DIR. Like I said, it doesnt matter if I try it from the CD or the HD it does the same thing either way. (copied win98 to a selfmade folder on the HD). Thanks again.

Hi Blacksheep2294,

That mobo is old enough that it may be effected by the the BIOS antivirus / Win 98 problem. Try going into BIOS and turning off the AV option and try re-installing the OS.

Just a note to say thanks for the help. Not sure what happened but I went in the BIOS to disable the AV and it was already off and tried one last time and setup took off this trip!
Just a note to newbies like me, get a second moniter, keyboard, and mouse so you can work on one and ask questions in here on the other!
I got a used 13" this morning and it is so much nicer not to have to disconnect my tower just to work on another computer. New mouse, keyboard....$20 at Walmart. Used moniter.....$25.
$45 beats the agrivation of all that changing!

Again, Thanks to everyone for the help.

If you don't have the desk space for a second keyboard/monitor/mouse, you can get a KVM switch for around the same price you paid. This will allow you to operate 2 computers with one set of peripherals. Linksys and Belkin both have nice little ones with integrated cables for around $40.
