messed up icons

The icons on my friends computer are also messed up. The ones on the desktop are all jumbled on top of each other. If I do an
automatic arrange they get worse. The only way to actually view them is to take the automatic arrange off, and then pull them around. The same thing in control panel, they are all on top of each other. I used tweakui to rebuild the icons, no change. The display setting is at 600 x 800 if that has anything to do with it.
All suggestions are appreciated.

Sixpack---The icon spacing was set too small. I went into Start/ Settings/ Control Panel/ Display/ Appearance Tab/ and then toward the bottom left there is an area to change the "Icon spacing (horizontal) and icon spacing (vertical). They were set to
(10), that is why they were overlapping. I set them to 40 and now they look OK. Mike
