MP3 codec?

I am trying to play a game but it keeps refusing to start.

The error message is this one:

Failed to initialize sound system
The system may be in use by another Application
Please close the other Application and hit Retry

I have no other apps using the sound. What gives?

I read in the readme that I would need an MP3 codec but I dunno what it is.

What is it and where do I get it?

I am running Windows 2000.

TIA

A DOS game?

What's your sound card?

First thing I would do is either upgrade the player (some people said they were having probs with version 9, so be careful) or, download a codec package. In my opinion, the upgrade would just be easier.

Windows game.

My sound card is SB Live! X-Gamer.

I'm gonna try the game in my XP Pro computer tomorrow, since the Media Player is a big download and I am on dial-up.

If it comes down to codecs, where do I get them?

If it's an old game I doubt that divx is required, just get a recent WMP version
