I've heard of that, but it was years ago on my old Mac.

Waste of time.
I wouldn't pay money for something that Windows (or another FREE 3rd party app) can already do. If a system is messed up, it's NOT going to fix it. If a system is working fine, it doesn't need fixing. If you have a system that is not working fine, and you need it fixed, then do it the right way, and don't expect a magical "fix-all" program to do it for you. I don't care if it's got 5 stars from ZDNet. This is akin to Norton's SystemCrash, or whatever it's called, also another bloated waste of money. |

Does chkdsk /f do the same thing as system sentry. Also what free 3rd party app do the same? Thank you for your help.

What is it, specifically, that you want the app to do?
System sentry is a bunch of different little apps all tied into a (costly) suite. If you have a specific problem, let's fix it, the right way. Chkdsk /f simply checks the disk for read errors and attempts to fix them, either by converting the messed up stuff to a file, or deleting it. |

I guess what I am looking for is a program that can recognize and fix file problems if they develop.

What operating system do you have?
If it's windows 98, then you have scanreg and SFC. If it's XP, then you have SFC and system restore. There is NO "fix-all" suite of software that will do it better than the native stuff built in to Windows. If you have a specific problem, there's usually a specific way to fix it, otherwise software like you mention can CAUSE more problems than it solves. I can quote hundreds (if not thousands) of links to people who used Norton SystemWorks, and System Sentry, that have ended up reformatting the computer, and returned the software for a refund (if possible). Just don't go buy stuff like this. With a tech resource like PCMech, you don't need anything else

Well my learned friend I have a couple of questions about SFC. I have not used it before. Is it something that you can use such as defrag as preventitive maintenance. I have XP Home Edition and try to maintain it so hopefully I won,t have problems. If it is what do I do?

XP takes pretty darn good care of itself. You should empty the temp files and temporary internet files, do a chkdsk /f and a defrag periodically, and keep it virus and spyware free. That's about all you need for preventative maintenance.

I have been doing some reading on XP and now realize that the files are protected so what I was looking at isn,t needed. Thank you for the input.
