I Think you get 30 days to activate after which it will not boot....

No - it will not shut it down, but then since you have no operating system (assuming not a dual boot) then it will not get past the POST (well... you do get a 'you need to activate screen')

I suppose technically you could reinstall after you use a boot disk to wipe the drive so the 30 days is wiped out too

What is the issue with activation? The activation is a system check and some sort of algorythim (SP?) of mac address, and serial numbers to identify the computer. If you skip the optional registering there is no personal info at all, (unless you consider that they probably can back into the hardware serial numbers and know what hardware is in the machine)

Too many people get too concerned about activation... it's no big deal. I've even had to phone in to request re-activation because I change hardware so often... they just ask why I need to re-activate... I tell them the hardware I changed... the spit out the code, have a nice day.

I too have re-activated several times due to hardware changes. Never a problem, MS people were polite in giving me a new activation number. I think the only people concerned with the activation process are those using (or trying to use) illegal copies and a few mis-informed people that think MS actually cares what kind of system you have.

Lets face it. It does give them the opportunity. I run XP legal, but I don't kid myself about the power I've given MS.

With XP Pro you don't have to worry about it. It never asks you to activate.

Cool

I have XP Pro and it had to be activated. It also had to be reativated both times I ran repair with the XP CD.

Do you have a corporate or student version?

Cool

I bought a WIN 98 OEM from a online supplier from Pensylvania December 1999. Sure looked like the real mccoy. But MS charged and the supplier was arrested shortly thereafter for selling pirated software. It made the papers here in Louisville. Even gave the name of Co I bought from.

That would be the upgrade on all those that it activated itself, I think for the full version (winXP pro) you will need to activate it, unless it's a corp. version, which I think (could be wrong) is the same thing as winXP pro, only no need to activate it, and way, way more money.
