losing hard disk space
I am losing hard disk space and I don't know why.Something is filling it up and I can't find out what it is.I have a 40 gig hard drive with 3 partitions.my c drive has 3 gigs with windows xp pro on it and very few other programs.yet I have zero hard drive space on it.I see that windows takes up about 1 gig, and another 800 mb on documents and settings, but that leaves about 1 gig unaccounted for. Also everytime I am able to free up any space it quickly (within several minutes) gets taken up.How can I find what is going on?
thanks rob |

you should find out how much windows is taking for your swapfile. It shouldn't be taking up a gig but my swap file take 300-700mb of space. So maybe you're really low on space and your swap file don't have enough room so when you free up that space windows uses it for the swapfile. Or you could have a virus.

It's probably the swap file and the system restore information.
3GB is an awfully small space for a partition with WinXP on it...should have set aside at least 10GB. Cricket

1. you can resize your recycle bin. 10% is the windows default. Right click on the recycle bin, select properties and have at it.
2. You can also resize your "temporary internet files" folder. Right click on the IE icon, select properties. Then select settings in Temp Internet files and have at it. 3. Also make sure your temporary internet folders are cleaned out on a regular basis. 4. If you use Ooutlook Express, go into Tools\Options then maintanence. Set the compact folders to compact in backgropund and set it for 1% waste ( or whatever percent you feel comfortable with.) you may also want to set your swap file on a different partition. not much good luck |

I'd go with the Partition Magic idea - no matter what you do, 3gb is too small for XP.

Disable system restore, wait for hard drive activity to stop, then reboot. Then you can re-enable it and limit its size if you want.
