Oops.. disabled page file.. bad results
I disabled the page file (I don't know what I was thinking). Now Windows won't start! I've tried every safe mode there is. At one point I could get into the login screen, without video. I'm getting stop errors like "NONPAGED_FILE" or something. Anyone know how I can get my computer running again?

What Windows version are you talking about here??? I did that once on Win98 and I am trying to remember how I got it back, if you are talking Win9x or ME --- then press F8 just like you do to get that menu to choose safe mode, but choose command prompt and at the C: prompt type >> scanreg /restore << make sure to space after scanreg... then you'll get a choice of several probably 5 registry files to restore to that should show you the date, choose one that is before you overtweaked your PC and it should be good to go... If it's Win2000 or XP you may have to boot from cdrom and do a repair install..

OK, glad to hear you found trouble but if you totally disabled virtual memory you are right in that windows probably will not boot up, Like I said it has been a while but I remember doing it on my win98 machine and I seem to remember that it wouldn't boot...

I still have it disabled. If it won't boot, why would they have the little radio button there then? My computer runs a lot faster now without that annoying swap file.

I have XP with a gig of RAM. So far it's running pretty well.

Boot to Safe mode command prompt. (if possible).
Go into regedit, and browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management Set "PagingFiles" to C:\pagefile.sys 768 768 as a REG_MULTI_SZ If you can get to Windows at all, copy and paste this into notepad, and save it as "pagefile_set.reg" REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management] "PagingFiles"=MULTI_SZ:768 768 That will set the pagefile max and min at 768 in the root of C: |
