Voice Activation Software
Anyone had any good experiences with newer versions of VAS ?
The only one I really know about is ViaVoice and I've heard conflicting advice about its usefulness. I want to be able to walk about with a radio headset on and command my PC with my voice! Is it getting possible yet? TIA |

I've tried a couple. Didn't have much luck. What I spoke translated out to what Gilda Radner would have interpreted it to be....violyns instead of violence, sometimes it typed words no where near what I spoke. I think your success would depend on how clearly you were willing to try to speak. Even my best attempt yeilded only about 20% accuracy. Some folks have great luck with it tho....
While I don't know any software that will voice command your computer, it would be my guess that programs have been written. I'll be interested to see what some one else posts... |

Thanks Dan.
It can't be far away now - the only thing restricting our use of the PC (or MAC) is the user interface. |

I use Dragon Naturally Speaknig regularly to dictate reports. Works quite well after it is properly trained.

Thanks Prew.
I'm particularly interested in PC voice control as opposed to voice dictation - does Dragon do this ? TIA |

It will control programs and switch between programs, move the mouse etc. I don't know how well it does this though because I've never used it for that purpose. (When you are sitting in front fo the computer its quicker to use the mouse).

Microsoft has developed...is developing?...something called "Microsoft Agent" that is aimed toward doing what you describe, magicdog.
Yes, I know, it's Micorosoft and Microsoft is evil, yada, yada, yada...but the concept is sound and maybe the execution is, or will be someday, too. At any rate, you can read up on it here. |

Thanks to you all for the tips - looks like I may be ahead of the software writers!

OS X has voice control built in, the only problem is there is no training option, so it can be a bit irratic, but all in all it works ok.
