XP oem or XP upgrade
Hey everyone,
Is it windy everywhere or just here in Grand Rapids? What is the pros or cons of XP upgrade or full version oem? Also how can I get rid of the logon box at startup on win 98se? Thanks |

OEM
Con- you do not get support from MS (which I beleive is for 90 days after the first contact anyway), but you still get us here, and the knowledge base at MS. You do not get the skimpy litTle book. You do not get the wonderful retail box. You do not get a plastic cd case to put your cd in. You can not do a upgrade install (this is a new machine as oem are only installed in new machines) only a full/repair install. EASY TO FORGET THAT THE KEY IS ON THE WRAPPER AND CAN GET THROWN OUT......SAVE THIS KEY!!!! Pro - costs a lot less, you do not contribute to the town dump filling in when you toss the box and the skimpy little book. You probably want to do a full fresh install anyway so the upgrade being missing is not an issue. You have a spare operating system for another pc (technically the os you upgrade from should not be installed some where else) Upgrade - Con- you have to hold onto the old OS so on a reinstall you can still prove you qualify for the upgrade. Pro- Cheaper than a regualr retail full version and if you work it out right a little cheaper than the OEM full version(but not much). You do get the 90 days of tech support from MS. I would go with the OEM myself. |

To get rid of the login box, change your password to a blank password (if it's not already blank) and then go into Networks and change the primary logon to Windows Logon.

It's windy here too! I'm just south of Chicago. On Sat. night there were several tornados around Illinois and last night (Sunday) as we were eating dinner, I watched through the sliding glass door, our rather heavy metal/plexiglass patio table flip upside down and fly 4 or 5 feet across the deck before landing upside down. Luckily it didn't break!
Well, since this was all off topic I better include something computer related.... I'd go with whichever is cheaper. I'd get the full OEM version myself. And yes, take very very good care of the CD Key. Save the sticker. Write it down somewhere else too! |
