You need to install Service Pack 1 or install JavaRuntime. Then reload Norton.
For Javaruntime do a google search.

SP1a has been installed. I have found a lot about this problem on Nortons Support site.

Norton can be a real pain sometimes. Just remember when you uninstall it you have to get everything related to Norton or Symantec off of the drive including the empty folders.
I use Norton but back it up with AVG anti-virus which is free from www.grisoft.com
I do this because a lot of virus/trojans now have a payload which looks to disable norton right off the bat.

Could be that is the actual problem: a trojan that keeps changing the Norton's key in the registry to mess it up.

I'd like to try this program you mention...but they require an email address...any spam come from these guys, or is it fairly safe to give it to 'em?

You have to give them an email address, because they email you the license key. You can't install it without the key.
