What is the software used to when I see everyone posting images from their computers like the whole desktop. The ones that show the whole screen?

You don't need s/w. Just click the Printscreen key on the image. Go to MS Paint or Word and Control+V or paste. There it will be.

You can also use Alt+PrintScreen to take just a shot of the window of an open program if you don't want the whole screen in the screen shot.
