Question hypothetical installation question

If your O/S (win98SE/ME) is not able to boot, could you upgrade to 2k and XP so that you could save your data and then reformat?

It depends on the problem. But I have a hypothetical question for you about your question. You successfully upgrade, then why would you want to format?

Where there is a will there is a way. Upgrading should work without data loss. Choose to convert (not format) to NTFS during the install.

Because upgrades from win9x are usually problematic.

Why would you go to NTFS?
If it's problematic, it would be better to leave it FAT32 and complete the upgrade. If it's botched, you can recover it in DOS much easier than if it's NTFS.
You also run the risk of losing everything during the NTFS conversion during install. It's much better to convert later if needed.

I've never had any problems with upgrading 98 to 2K, but XP is a different story. However, I've always done it with a decent running 98 system, it's always been a rule of thumb that upgrading something that's broke will not fix it, it will just be a broke upgrade.

I'd want to know why 98 isn't booting before I'd advise the best way to proceed, there are a few things you can do, examples:

fdisk/mbr
sys c:
Boot to dos and scanreg/restore
Get it into safe mode if you can and disable startups
Reinstall 98 to the same path
Reinstall 98 to a different path

What does the "fdisk/mbr" command do?

Thanks, glc. That explained it.

So to sum this whole thing up, this isn't the best method to recover data on a 9x system that won't boot, correct?

Thanks, guys!

The *best* and safest way to recover data is slave the hard drive into another system and copy over what you need.

That's what I normally do. I was asking for those times when another system isn't available.
